Box Score Winthrop defeated High Point baseball, 12-6, Sunday afternoon in the second contest of a three-game Big South series at Erath Field. The teams will play again on Monday at 1:00 pm.
Brandon Moore (3-2) took the loss for the Panthers (18-28, 6-14 Big South) pitching four innings allowing eight runs, eight earned, walking five and striking out three. Eagles pitcher Heath Rollins (9-4) gave up two runs on three hits and struck out nine to earn the win for Winthrop.
Seby Renta scored his third home run of the season and led HPU with three hits, two runs, and one RBI.
WU led by as many as 10 runs, but High Point scored three unearned runs in the eighth inning and one in the ninth before Eagles pitcher Jon Wilson closed out the game. Wilson struck out one in 1.3 innings to preserve the win.
The Eagles (34-14, 15-2 Big South) jumped out to an early lead when Rollins tripled to drive in Chris Carrara and give WU a 1-0 lead. Daniel Carte's sacrifice fly drove in Rollins for a 2-0 advantage.
Winthrop went on to score four runs in the second and one run a piece in the third and fourth innings, before the Panthers put one on the board. Bobby Brown drove in Renta in the bottom of the fourth. Renta then hit a home run in the sixth to bring High Point within six at 8-2.
After WU drove in two runs in the seventh and two in the eighth, HPU rallied in the eighth scoring three runs.
Renta singled to left field and advanced to second on a ground out ball by Anthony Bell. Eagles pitcher Ray Stencel walked Jerry Campos and Matt Christie to fill the bases.
Juan Carcheri drove in Renta and Campos. Chris Ramirez hit a single to allow Christie to cross the plate.
After a scoreless ninth for the Eagles, High Point tried one last time to rally, but came up short only scoring one in the bottom of the ninth to finish the game 12-6. Bell tripled to right field and scored off a single by Campos.
Seniors Josh Cotten, Bob Helman, Matt Kniginyzky, Jeremy Neyra, Chris Ramirez , and Seby Renta were honored before the game.
