Charleston Southern Takes Two From Baseball

Charleston Southern posted a nine-run sixth inning en route to a 14-4 win over High Point Saturday in the second game of a Big South Conference baseball series at Erath Field.

In the first game of the doubleheader, CSU topped the Panthers 8-5.

The Buccaneers improve to 19-14, 7-7 Big South, while HPU dips to 15-20 overall and 4-7 in league play.

In game one, CSU starter Josh Evans (6-1) pitched 6.1 innings, allowing 10 hits, four runs, four earned, walking three but striking out six.

The Buccaneers went up 7-0 before High Point scored in the bottom of the seventh. Chris Ramirez tripled to right field driving in Jeremy Neyra and Matt Christie.

In the same inning, first baseman Randy Schwartz doubled allowing Ramirez to cross the plate followed by a Josh Cotten single allowing Schwartz to score and pull the Panthers within 7-4.

After a scoreless eighth, CSU added another run when Brian Sole stole third base and scored off an error by Panther's catcher Ro Castro.

Schwartz hit a solo homer in the bottom of the ninth.

Eammon Portice (5-2) took his second loss of the season. Portice pitched five innings, striking out seven, but allowing nine hits, six runs, four earned and walking one.

Brad Bissell (3-4) pitched 6 innings, allowing eight hits, two run, two earned, walked one, and struck out five to get the win for Charleston Southern in the second game. Matt Schlanger (3-4) took the loss for the Panthers.

The Buccaneers got on the board first from an unearned run by Justin Fyle. High Point tied things up at 1-1 when Neyra hit his first homerun of the season in the bottom of the third.

Juan Carcheri scored in the fifth off a sacrifice fly ball. Brett Lazar doubled to left center allowing Dustin Holtzman and Seby Renta to score.

CSU broke open the game with a nine-run sixth and scored two runs in the seventh. The Buccaneers earned two more insurance runs in the ninth inning to win the game, 14-4.

High Point had a total of 24 hits for both games, while Charleston Southern racked up 28.

The teams play the third and final game of their series Sunday afternoon in High Point. First pitch at Erath Field is set for 1:00 pm.
