Box Score What began as a pitchers dual turned into some late offensive fireworks as Birmingham-Southern overcame a three-run deficit to upend High Point 5-4 at Scrushy-Striplin Field on Sunday.
BSC starter Josh Britnell carried a no hitter through 6.1 innings before Jeremy Neyra's one out single ended the bid. Britnell, who equaled a season high with eight strikeouts while allowing one run on two hits, came out of the game after giving up a leadoff single to Seby Renta in the eighth.
The host Panthers, 25-15 and 11-4 Big South Conference, broke the scoreless tie in the fifth to take a 1-0 lead.
HPU, 18-25 and 6-12 in league play, plated four runs in the eighth to take a 4-1 lead. Renta led off the inning with a single and later scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Mark Shorey delivered a pinch-hit RBI single followed by a Dustin Holtzman two-run double.
Scott Billak struck out swinging but reached first when the wild pitch got away from High Point catcher Justin Pinyan. Jonathan Sanford followed with a walk. After a strikeout, Adam Tucker smacked a three-run home run to tie the game and Blake Burton followed with solo home run to give the Birmingham-Southern its 5-4 edge.
Eammon Portice worked six strong innings, carrying a no hitter into the fourth inning before a Billy Froehlich single broke his no-hit bid. Portice finished with six strikeouts and one walk and gave up one run on five hits.
Matt Kniginyzyk, 3-4, took the loss for HPU, allowing four runs on three hits with five strikeouts.
Michael Repole earned the win for the host Panthers. Repole had one strikeout while allowing three hits to improve to 4-0.
High Point will travel to Chapel Hill on Wednesday to face No. 12 North Carolina at 6:00 pm, while Birmingham-Southern is on the road at Jacksonville State on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
