Box Score David Horne tossed a complete game allowing one run on eight hits with four strikeouts to pitch Birmingham-Southern to a 3-1 win over High Point Saturday in Birmingham, Ala.
The host Panthers, who extended their winning streak to three games, improved to 24-15 overall and 10-4 in the Big South Conference, while HPU fell to 18-24 overall 6-11 in league play.
Bubba O'Donnell took the loss for High Point, allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts. Horne improved his record to 5-2 while stranding nine HPU runners on the afternoon.
BSC struck first in the second when Blake Burton singled and scored on a Pat Mizerany RBI single to give Birmingham-Southern a 1-0 lead.
The visiting Panthers tied the game in the top of the third when Juan Carcheri scored on a failed pick off attempt.
BSC scored a run in the sixth and eighth innings to equal the final margin of victory. Adam Tucker led off the sixth with a double and scored on a Mizerany sac-fly. Tucker hit a solo home run in the eighth.
High Pont had an opportunity to tie the game in the seventh, putting runners at the corners with one out. Mizerany made a diving stop of a Chris Ramirez ground ball, stepped on third and threw to first to complete the double play.
The dueling Panthers wrap up the series at 1:00 pm (CST) on Sunday.
