Box Score Billy Froehlich and Adam Tucker combined to drive in six runs to lead Birmingham-Southern to a 9-2 victory over High Point at Scrushy-Striplin Field Friday in Birmingham, Ala.
The visiting Panthers fell to 18-23 and 6-10 in Big South Conference, while the host Panthers improved to 23-15, 9-4 in the league play.
HPU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Juan Carcheri singled up the middle and then scored on a throwing error.
Froehlich gave BSC a 2-1 lead with a two-run home run in the bottom of the third. Matt Barber walked to set up the home run two batters later.
High Point tied the game in the fifth. Cacheri reached on a fielding error and advanced to second on a balk before scoring on a Randy Schwartz single.
In the sixth, BSC broke the tie when Tucker led off the frame with a double and scored on a Pat Mizerany sac-fly.
After a 54-minute rain delay just before the start of the seventh, the host Panthers busted loose for six runs in the bottom half of the seventh for a 9-2 lead. The big blow came on a Tucker grand slam.
Brandon Hynick, 6-3, was the winning pitcher for BSC, ending a two-game personal losing skid. Hynick tossed six innings and had six strikeouts while allowing two unearned runs on four hits.
Matt Schlanger, 4-5, took the loss for High Point. Schlanger allowed three runs on five hits with five strikeouts and four walks before leaving the contest after the rain delay.
High Point and Birmingham-Southern play game two of the three game series at 2:00 pm (CST) on Saturday.
