Baseball Falls At Charlotte In Rescheduled Game

Box Score

Kris Rochelle homered and Adam Willard had three hits to lead Charlotte past High Point, 13-2, Wednesday afternoon at Tom & Lib Phillips Field in Charlotte.

The 49ers improve to 11-3 on the season, while HPU dips to 6-11.

Spencer Steedley (2-1) allowed two runs in five innings to pick up the win for Charlotte. Matt Schlanger (1-1) took the loss for the Panthers.

Josh Cotten had a pair of hits and an RBI for High Point. Brett Lazar drove in the Panthers' other run.

Charlotte, which has won 10 of 11 games, out-hit HPU 12-5 and took advantage of four Panther errors.

The 49ers took an early 2-0 lead in the first after Willard drove in Cory Lane with a base hit and later stole home.

The Panthers pulled within 2-1 in the top of the second when Josh Cotten smashed a lead-off double down the left field line and later scored on a bases-loaded fielder's choice by Lazar. But Steedley coaxed a groundout and HPU left the bases loaded.

After the 49ers added two runs in the bottom of the second, Cotten drove in the Panthers' second run in the top of the third with his second consecutive double, plating Chris Ramirez. But Charlotte added three runs in the bottom of the third for a 7-2 lead, and tacked on four runs in the sixth and single runs in the seventh and eighth.

Four different players drove in at least two runs for Charlotte.

Originally, High Point and Charlotte were each supposed to travel to Virginia Wednesday for games against Virginia Tech and Longwood, but inclement weather forced cancellation of both contests.

The Panthers open a three-game series with Ball State Friday at Erath Field (3:00 pm).
