Liberty Takes Two From Baseball

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Michael Solbach took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and went the distance to lead Liberty to a 4-2 win over High Point in game one of a Big South Conference baseball doubleheader at Erath Field. The Flames posted a 4-1 win in the second game to sweep the twin-bill.

Liberty improves to 15-7 (2-4 in Big South play), while High Point dips to 11-17 (1-5 in the League).

GAME 1
Solbach (3-1) went 7 2/3 innings without allowing a hit in the opener before Josh Cotten broke up the no-hitter with an RBI double. Matt Schlanger (2-3) took the loss for the Panthers.

P.K. Keller and Aaron Grijalva each hit solo home runs in for Liberty.

The Flames pushed across a run in the first on Keller's third homer of the season, and added two more in the second when Chad Miller's two-run triple plated Grijalva and Phil John for a 3-0 advantage.

Liberty increased its lead to 4-0 in the sixth on Grijalva's third home run of the year.

The Panthers broke through in the eighth for a pair of runs. Chris Ramirez reached on a fielder's choice and came around to score on Cotten's two-out double down the left-field line. Seby Renta then drove home Cotten with a base hit up the middle to pull HPU within 4-2.

But Solbach shut the door in the ninth to notch his second complete-game victory of the season. He allowed three hits and five walks while striking out five.

Schlanger also struck out five, and allowed five hits and four runs in 6 2/3 innings of work. Brandon Moore tossed 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for HPU.

GAME 2
Chris Zuvich (2-2) allowed one run in seven innings to pick up the win for LU, while Bob Helman (0-4) was saddled with the loss. Phillip Thompson tossed two scoreless innings of relief to pick up his second save of the season.

Grijalva and Adam Kearney each had three hits for the Flames. Ramirez tallied a team-high two hits for HPU.

Liberty got on the board early with a run in the first. Grijalva scored Michael Just with a one-out single for a 1-0 Flames lead.

High Point tied things up at 1-1 with a run in the third. Justin Pinyan drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single to left by Ramirez.

The Flames took the lead for good with an unearned run in the fifth. Keller ripped a lead-off single to left, advanced to second on a base hit by Grijalva, moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt and scored on an RBI groundout by Jeff Brown for a 2-1 edge. LU tacked on an insurance run in the sixth on a Miller double which plated Patrick Gaillard.

Zuvich scattered three hits and four walks over seven innings while striking out four. Helman allowed one earned run and six hits in 4 2/3 innings, fanning two hitters. Mark Shorey threw three scoreless innings of relief for HPU.

The Panthers return to action Wednesday at Wofford (4:00 pm) before traveling to UNC Asheville next weekend for their first Big South Conference road series of the year.

Liberty visits in-state rival James Madison on Tuesday (2:30 pm) and hosts Winthrop next weekend.
