Box Score High Point scored four runs in the first and pushed across nine runs in the third en route to an 18-0 rout of rival ElonTuesday afternoon in baseball action at Erath Field.
The Panthers improve to 10-15, while Elon dips to 14-9. The teams played just seven innings due to impending weather.
High Point scored 18 runs in a game for the third time this season. The Panthers pounded North Carolina A&T 18-3 on Feb. 20 and defeated Campbell 18-5 on Mar. 4. It was also the second shutout of the year for HPU, which beat Ball State 6-0 on Mar. 12.
Freshman Bubba O'Donnell struck out seven hitters in six scoreless innings and allowed just three hits for his first collegiate win. The Panthers pounded out a season-high 19 hits.
Elon starter Justin Bors (0-1) allowed six earned runs in two innings of work. Nine of the 18 runs the Phoenix pitching staff surrendered were unearned.
Bobby Brown drove in a game-high five runs for the Panthers, while Seby Renta went 4-for-5 at the plate with a home run and three RBI.
Drew Davis collected two of Elon's three hits.
The Panthers took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI double by Renta, a two-run double by Brown and a two-out single by Brett Lazar.
In the third, High Point sent 11 men to the plate and exploded for a season-high nine runs. Renta led off the frame with his first homer of the year. Ro Castro's bases-clearing double off Elon reliever Chris DeFago brought home Lazar, Brown and Dustin Holtzman. Anthony Bell's single scored Castro. After Bell came home later in the inning while Chris Ramirez was caught stealing, Brown's double in the gap plated Holtzman, Renta and Josh Cotten for a commanding 13-0 edge.
HPU tacked on four more runs in the fourth. Cotten's two-run double which scored Ramirez and Juan Carcheri was the biggest blow. The Panthers added another run in the fifth after Lazar tripled and scored to bring the game to its 18-0 final.
Ricky Hudson pitched a scoreless seventh for the Panthers, striking out two.
The Panthers open a three-game Big South series Friday at home against Liberty (2:30 pm). Elon gets a visit from SoCon rival Davidson this weekend beginning with a 7:00 pm game in Burlington Friday night.
