Box Score No. 25-ranked Coastal Carolina pounded out 17 hits and completed a three-game sweep with a 9-6 win over High Point Monday afternoon in Big South Conference baseball action at Erath Field.
Matt Christie,
Josh Cotten and
Jeremy Neyra each had two hits for the Panthers (9-15, 0-3 Big South).
Mike Valter (2-0) got the win in relief for the Chanticleers (18-3, 3-0).
Rob Bland (0-5) took the loss for HPU.
Mike Costanzo threw three scoreless innings of relief to pick up his fifth save of the year.
After Coastal struck first with a run in the top of the opening inning, the Panthers tied things up in the bottom of the frame on an RBI groundout by
Dustin Holtzman which scored
Chris Ramirez. HPU took a 2-1 lead off Chanticleer starter
Kevin Marrie in the second when Neyra's one-out single plated
Ro Castro.
The Chants edged back in front with a pair of runs in the top of the third. A sacrifice fly by
Mike Fuentes scored
Danny Morgan, and a two-out infield hit by
Tommy Baldridge brought home
Chris Todd for a 3-2 Coastal lead.
HPU tied things back up with a run in the bottom of the inning. Holtzman singled, advanced to third on a double by
Bobby Brown and then scored on an RBI groundout by
Josh Doane.
But Coastal struck for four runs in the fourth to build a 7-3 lead.
Jon Foisy came home from third base when a failed pickoff attempt at first brought Costanzo to third. Costanzo came home on a sacrifice fly by Morgan, and Baldridge's two-out single to left scored Fuentes and
Aaron Verrett.
The Chants sandwiched single runs in the fifth and sixth innings around
Seby Renta's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth which scored Cotten.
High Point pulled within 9-6 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh off CCU reliever
Donnie Presley. Holtzman drew a lead-off walk and eventually scored on a wild pitch, and Castro's sacrifice fly plated
Nick Thompson.
But Costanzo, who went 3-for-4 at the plate, shut the Panthers down in the eighth and ninth to give the Chants their sixth-straight win.
Matt Kniginyzky struck out four and allowed one run in 4 1/3 innings of relief.
Baldridge and
Michael DeJesus each went 4-for-6 for the Chants.
High Point hosts Elon Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 pm at Erath Field.
