Box Score Coastal Carolina posted a seven-run third inning en route to a 12-3 win over High Point Sunday in the second game of a Big South Conference baseball series at Erath Field.
The Chants won their fifth straight and improved to 17-3 (2-0 in the Big South), while the Panthers fell to 9-14 (0-2).
Byron Binda (3-1) threw four hitless innings of relief to earn the win for CCU. Matt Schlanger (2-2) took the loss for the Panthers.
Jeremy Neyra, Randy Schwartz, Dustin Holtzman and Ro Castro each tallied a hit for the Panthers. Holtzman, Chris Ramirez and Nick Thompson scored HPU's three runs.
Danny Morgan went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Chants with a home run, three runs scored and two RBI.
High Point took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Ramirez walked, moved to third on a double by Neyra and scored on a fielder's choice by Josh Cotten.
But Coastal sent 11 men to the plate in the third inning and struck for seven runs to turn the game around. A bases-loaded double by Michael DeJesus scored Mike Costanzo and Jon Foisy. Aaron Verrett and Mike Fuentes followed with back-to-back RBI singles. Verrett would score on a throwing error, and a sacrifice fly by Dom Duggan plated Fuentes. The final run of the inning came on Chris Todd's single which scored Tommy Baldridge for a 7-1 Chanticleer edge.
High Point pulled within 7-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Holtzman singled and Thompson drew a walk from Coastal starter Andy DeLaGarza before Castro doubled down the left-field line to score Holtzman. Thompson came around on an RBI groundout by Matt Christie.
The Chants would add single insurance runs in the fifth and sixth and three runs in the eighth to complete the victory.
DeLaGarza allowed three runs in four innings, while Schlanger yielded six earned runs in 2 1/3 innings of work. The Chants took advantage of five Panther errors.
