Box Score Andy Goff's bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th scored
Grant Achilles and lifted Wake Forest to a 5-4 come-from-behind win over High Point Wednesday afternoon at Hooks Stadium in Winston-Salem.
The Deacons (5-7) rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the bottom of the ninth and spoiled a tremendous start by High Point freshman
Matt Schlanger, who tossed six scoreless innings, striking out five and allowing just two hits.
Kyle Young (1-0) didn't allow a hit in two innings and earned the win for Wake, while
Bob Helman (0-2) took the loss in relief for High Point.
HPU (5-8) has dropped three straight games, all in extra innings and all to Atlantic Coast Conference foes. Virginia Tech outlasted the Panthers 7-5 in 10 innings Saturday and 6-5 in 12 innings Sunday.
Josh Doane and
Dustin Holtzman each collected a pair of hits for the Panthers. Holtzman also scored a pair of runs.
Ro Castro drove in a pair of runs for HPU.
High Point put three runs on the board off Wake starter
Sean Souders in the second. Holtzman's one-out single scored
Mark Shorey, and a base hit by Castro plated Holztman and
Bobby Brown for a 3-0 Panther lead.
The Panthers made it 4-0 in the fifth when Holtzman doubled, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Castro, and scored on a single to left by Doane.
Schlanger gave way to
Josh Cotten, who allowed one run in two innings of relief (
J.B. Tucker's seventh inning sacrifice fly which pulled Wake within 4-1).
The Panthers took that 4-1 edge into the bottom of the ninth, but the Deacons rallied to tie the score. A single by Tucker scored
Brett Linnenkohl to make it 4-2 and gave Wake runners at first and second with one out. Wake's
Ryder Mathias nearly laced extra bases down the right field line, but High Point first baseman
Jon Pavlack made a great play to retire Mathias. The runners advanced to second and third on the play.
Down to its last out, Wake Forest drew even when a fielding error by the HPU second baseman on a grounder by
Brendan Enick brought home Goff and
Casey Sterk to tie things up at 4-4. Helman got
Matt Miller to ground out and send the game to extra innings.
High Point's
Chris Ramirez reached on an error to start the top of the 10th and moved to second on a sacrifice by
Jeremy Neyra, but Young struck out Shorey and got Cotten to ground out to end the threat.
In the bottom of the inning, Achilles reached base with a one-out walk. Linnenkohl followed with a single and Achilles raced around to third base. HPU then intentionally walked
Matt Antonelli to load the bases, setting the stage for Goff's game-winning sacrifice fly.
The Panthers host Campbell Friday afternoon at Erath Field (2:30 pm) and then visit the Camels for a Saturday doubleheader (12:00 pm).
