Box Score Chris Ramirez and Josh Doane had three hits apiece and Matt Schlanger struck out a career-high nine hitters to help High Point complete a three-game weekend sweep with an 8-5 victory over Ball State Sunday afternoon at Erath Field.
The Panthers improve to 9-11 and recorded their first weekend series sweep since a three-game blanking of Radford in April 2003. Ball State, which was ranked No. 3 in the RPI entering the weekend set, drops to 6-8.
Schlanger, a freshman, allowed five hits and four runs in 5 2/3 innings of work en route to his second win of the year (2-1). Matt Kniginyzky tossed three innings of relief for his second save in as many days.
Luke Behning (1-1) took the loss for the Cardinals.
Ramirez had two doubles and drove in three runs, and Bobby Brown added two RBI for the Panthers.
Ball State took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first when C.J. Webb was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Chris Pestle followed with a two-out, two-run single. The Panthers got a run back in the bottom of the frame on Mark Shorey's one-out single to left which scored Ramirez.
HPU tied things up in the bottom of the third on a two-run double by Brown which plated Shorey and Doane for a 3-3 deadlock.
After Ball State's Matt Singleton doubled and scored on a base hit by Mike Sullivan in the top of the fourth, the Panthers took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning when Ramirez's one-out double to left brought home Doane and Ro Castro for a 5-4 Panther lead.
High Point added single runs in the sixth and seventh. The Cardinals pulled within 7-5 in the top of the eighth on a Pestle RBI double which scored Webb, but Jon Pavlack's second hit of the day in the bottom of the inning scored pinch-runner Anthony Bell for an insurance run and an 8-5 cushion.
Facing the potential tying run in the top of the ninth, Kniginyzky got Marc Franz to ground into a game-ending double play to cement the victory.
The Panthers travel to Greenville for a Tuesday night date at East Carolina (7:00 pm) before opening Big South play next Friday at home against Coastal Carolina.
