Baseball Captures Third-Straight With 3-2 Win Over Gardner-Webb

Box Score

Mark Shorey drove home Josh Doane in the seventh inning and Matt Kniginyzky tossed 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to give High Point its third-straight victory, a 3-2 win over Gardner-Webb Tuesday afternoon at Varsity Field in Boiling Springs.

The Panthers improve to 4-5, while the homestanding Bulldogs drop to 4-3. Gardner-Webb left 15 men on base.

Kniginyzky fanned five hitters and allowed just one hit in relief of HPU starter Bob Helman (two runs in 5 2/3 innings of work while striking out a pair).

Doane led off the game with a solo home run, but Gardner-Webb rallied to tie the game with three consecutive singles in the bottom of the first and took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second when starting pitcher Blake Lalli drove in a run after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

High Point pulled even in the top of the fifth, tying the score at 2-2 on an RBI single through the right side by Shorey which plated Chris Ramirez

The Panthers got the game-winner in the seventh when Doane doubled and then came around when Shorey reached on a fielding error by Bulldog second baseman Matt Bridges.

GWU left runners on base in the seventh and the eighth and seemingly caught a break in the bottom of the ninth to keep hopes alive. Jay McConnell led off the inning by reaching on a throwing error and pinch-runner Brandon Martin darted to third base with one out after another throwing error by the Panthers. A squeeze bunt was improperly executed on the ensuing pitch, however, and Martin was thrown out at the plate to end the scoring chance.

Doane (2-for-5, HR, two runs), Ramirez (2-for-5) and Matt Christie (2-for-3) accounted for six of High Point¹s nine hits on the day.

Zach Farry (0-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing the unearned run in the seventh.

High Point hosts Wofford today at Erath Field (2:30 pm) before welcoming Virginia Tech for a two-game weekend series Saturday and Sunday.
