Baseball Downs North Carolina A&T, 4-3

Box Score

Seby Renta's RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Brett Lazar and helped High Point claim a 4-3 extra-inning win over North Carolina A&T Saturday in the Panthers' home opener at Erath Field.

The Panthers have now won four of the last five meetings between the cross-county foes, and improve to 2-5. The Aggies drop to 1-3.

Chris Ramirez and Josh Cotten homered for the Panthers. Brandon Moore (2-0) earned the win in relief after allowing just one run in five innings of work.

Erik Neal (0-1) took the loss for the Aggies.

Ramirez hit a two-run home run in the first inning off A&T starter Michael Hauff which scored Josh Doane and gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead.

The Aggies came back in the second with a pair off HPU starter Rob Bland. Nick Mayo drove in Marcus Mack and Patrick Oates with a one-out single up the middle to tie the score at 2-2.

Both teams scored a single run in the sixth. The Aggies took a short-lived 3-2 lead when Dustin Ijames' sacrifice fly to right brought home Mack, but the Panthers knotted things up in the bottom of the frame on Cotten's third homer of the year, a solo shot to left off Hauff.

The game (which was originally slated for seven innings) remained tied at 3-3 until the bottom of the 10th, when Lazar drew a one-out walk and stole second. After Cotten walked, Lazar advanced to third and scored on Renta's single to right.

Bland allowed two runs in five innings of work and struck out four Aggies without walking a batter. Hauff went 5.1 innings for A&T, allowing three runs, five hits and four walks while striking out five.

A doubleheader was originally scheduled for Saturday, but the length of the first game wiped out any chance of completing the second game before darkness fell.

The teams move to Greensboro for a Sunday game at War Memorial Stadium (11:00 am).

High Point visits Gardner-Webb on Tuesday (2:30 pm) and hosts Wofford Wednesday at Erath Field (2:30 pm). Live stats will be available for the HPU/Wofford contest at highpointpanthers.com.
