HPU Men's Basketball Earns 103-61 Victory over Ferrum

High Point sophomore Arizona Reid scored 27 points and senior teammate Akeem Scott added a career-high 24 as the HPU Panthers overcame a slow start to capture a 103-61 victory over the visiting Ferrum Panthers on Saturday night in Millis Arena.

High Point (4-2) trailed by as many as eight points (27-19) in the first half before making a late charge to hold a slight 38-32 edge at halftime over Ferrum (1-5). HPU opened the second half with a 19-3 run in the first five minutes to take control of the game.

"I was a little disappointed in how flat we came out in the first half," said HPU head coach Bart Lundy. "I was glad to see us pick things up at the end of the first half and then start the second half with some really high energy. I thought AZ and Akeem played well and I was also proud of how Troy Bowens bounced back after struggling with his shot at Kentucky. Overall, I was glad to earn the win and also excited to continue getting some of the young guys some playing experience. We will need all the experience we can get for our upcoming games."

In addition to Reid and Scott, High Point also got solid offensive production from Troy Bowen with 12 points and Landon Quick with 10 points. Terrance Stokes finished with seven points but also hauled down a team-leading 10 rebounds. Quick handed out six assists while fellow point guard Mike Jefferson led the way with a career-best seven assists. HPU out-rebounded Ferrum, 52-31.

Defensively, HPU tallied six blocked shots including four by Stokes and recorded 14 steals with Scott swiping four to pace the squad. High Point held the visiting Panthers to just 32.8 percent (22 of 67) shooting from the field including a 10-34 (29.4 percent) showing in the second half.

High Point shot a season best 58.1 percent from the floor in the game connecting on 36 of 62 attempts. HPU also made 50 percent (6 of 12) from beyond the three-point line with Bowen hitting four of his five tries.

HPU next visits in-state rival Elon on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the first of five consecutive road games for the Panthers. High Point will close out the 2005 calendar with games at Longwood, Utah and Utah Valley State before playing at Liberty on Jan. 3 to open 2006. The Panthers next home game will be Jan. 7 against Charleston Southern.
