Panther Volleyball Falls 3-0 to Charleston Southern

Box Score

The High Point volleyball suffered a disappointing 3-0 (30-27, 30-25, 30-23) loss to Charleston Southern on Saturday afternoon at Millis Athletic Center.

The Panthers (15-15, 5-8 Big South) battled throughout the match but just could not get over the hump against a gritty Buccaneer (14-16, 4-9 Big South) squad.

Sophomore Jamie Kaufman led the way offensively for High Point with 14 kills and connected at a .361 clip with just one hitting error on the day. Senior Jenelle Stouffer paced the Panther defense finishing with 13 digs while Whitney Kaltenegger chipped in 10 digs. Michelle Feiser handed out a team best 21 assists in the contest.

Erin Vicker led a trio of CSU attackers in double digits with 12 kills while Victoria Owens' 17 digs topped all passers. Katie O'Riordan dished out 38 assists.

"This has just been a rough weekend for us," said HPU head coach Chad Esposito. "We struggled putting anything together in both matches. We are unable to match Charleston Southern's intensity today and that is disappointing. We gave up some late scoring runs that really cost us today. Hopefully, we can use this week to regroup and regain a flow offensively and defensively as we close out the regular season and prepare for the conference tournament."

Charleston Southern grabbed the lead early in game one before High Point raced back to tie the score at six. The two squads traded several points and then CSU scored five consecutive points to earn a slight advantage, 18-13. The Panthers battled back and knotted the score at 20, but the Buccaneers again gained an edge behind a 4-1 spurt and closed out the game for the 30-27 victory.

High Point pushed in front quickly in the second stanza taking an 11-5 lead, but CSU fought back to even the score at 16. The two teams settled into a sideout contest until a late four-point surge by the Bucs allowed them to earn the 30-25 win.

Game three looked as if it would continue to be another evenly played affair but Charleston Southern used a 11-2 run to grab a 21-12 advantage. The Panthers refused to go away quietly but the deficit proved too great as CSU was able to hold on for the 30-23 decision.

HPU next steps out of conference play to conclude their road slate on Tuesday at Campbell before closing out the regular season on Saturday (Nov. 12) at home versus Big South leading Winthrop at 4 p.m.
