Seven High Point players scored in double figures and the HPU defense forced 37 turnovers in an impressive 110-57 victory over Southeastern University on Monday night at Millis Athletic Center.
High Point (2-1) playing its third game in the last four days showed no sign of weariness in reaching the 100-point mark for the third straight time in a home opener under head coach Bart Lundy. It was the second consecutive year that HPU topped the century mark against Southeastern (5-4) having defeated the Fire last year 118-66.
"I thought we played with a lot of energy and aggressiveness considering it was our third game in four days," said Lundy. "It was good to have the opportunity to give some of our younger players extended playing time. Those guys definitely need to get as much work as possible in our non-conference games. I felt like we had solid production up and down the lineup. Anytime you get seven players in double figures and force the amount of turnovers that we did then you were doing some stuff right."
Sophomore Arizona Reid continued his strong play for HPU finishing with his second straight double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Terrance Stokes also posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman Justin Dunn led all scorers with 17 points, with Issa Konare (11), Akeem Scott (13), Melvin Crowder (10) and Landon Quick (11) rounding out the group of double digit scorers.
Eleven of 12 Panther players who saw action scored and also 11-of-12 recorded a steal in a smothering defensive performance that limited Southeastern to just 32.8 percent (19-58) shooting from the floor including 20.8 percent (5 of 24) from beyond the three-point arc. HPU tallied 25 steals among the 37 turnovers they forced the Fire into for the game.
Joey Gunter led Southeastern with 14 points followed by 12 from Brandon McGarity.
High Point scored the first 11 points of the game and never looked back maintaining a 20-point lead for much of the opening half. HPU held a 53-30 lead at the break and continued to widen its margin to the 53-point final deficit.
The Panthers will have a few days off for the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to the hardwood versus in-state rival Western Carolina on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Millis Athletic Center.
