Box Score A road weary High Point volleyball team suffered a disappointing 3-0 loss at Davidson on Wednesday night in the finale of their month long, 12-match road swing.
The Panthers, who slipped to 10-7 overall, struggled against the Wildcats (7-11) from the opening serve. HPU hit just .032 as a team for the match as Davidson earned the victory by scores of 30-16, 30-20, 36-34.
High Point battled a pattern of early deficits trailing 4-0 in each of the frames. HPU also fell behind by double digits in each of the first two games facing a 25-10 deficit in game one and a losing game two by 10 points. In fact, the Panthers did not earn their first lead of the match until earning a 28-27 edge in the third stanza.
While looking overmatched for most of the first two games, High Point refused to go away quietly in the deciding game. After falling behind 19-13, the Panthers began to claw their way back into the match. HPU eventually knotted the score at 25 marking the first of 10 ties in the frame. The two teams battled back-and-forth from that point with both squads having opportunities to win the game. High Point served twice to extend the match while Davidson took four chances to finally earn the match victory.
"I am very disappointed with tonight's performance," said HPU head coach Chad Esposito. "For the most part, Davidson deserves all the credit for just outplaying us in every phase of the game. For whatever reason, we did not come ready to play and got what we deserved. Hopefully, we will learn a lesson from this experience and come prepared for each of our remaining matches this season."
Senior Michelle Feiser led the way with nine kills for the Panther offense. Freshman Lauren Hatch recorded her third straight double-double finishing with 19 kills and 10 digs. Jenelle Stouffer posted 11 digs to pace the HPU defense.
Having completed an epic road journey, High Point returns to action this weekend with a pair of home matches. The Panthers take on Big South foe UNC Asheville on Saturday (4 p.m.) and face Birmingham-Southern on Sunday (2 p.m.).
