Five High Point players scored in double-figures (led by
Zione White's 20 points) as the Panthers won their fifth game in a row with a 92-73 conquest of UNC Asheville Wednesday night in the Millis Center.
Danny Gathings (14 points, 10 rebounds) and
Patrick Hilliman (12 points, 10 rebounds) each recorded double-doubles for High Point (8-8 overall), which started Big South Conference play 3-0 for the second-consecutive season.
The Panthers set a school record for points scored in a non-overtime Big South Conference game.
Mark Wilson (15 points) and
Akeem Scott (10 points) also reached double-figures for HPU.
The Bulldogs dipped to 3-11 (0-3 in the Big South).
Bryan McCullough led UNCA with 18 points, while High Point native
Steven Rush added 14 points.
High Point, which has won six of its last seven games, led 47-42 at halftime and scored 20 of the first 23 points of the second half to break things open. The Panthers took advantage of 22 Bulldog turnovers and held a 20-0 advantage in fast-break points while dishing out 22 assists.
A competitive first half featured six ties and six lead changes. Asheville's last lead came at 19-17 following a layup by McCullough at the 11:48 mark of the opening half. The Panthers jumped out to a 33-26 advantage at the 6:47 mark on a free throw by Hilliman, but the Bulldogs used a 10-3 run to knot things back up at 36-36 when Rush was fouled while attempting a three-pointer and drained a trio of free throws.
The teams traded three-pointers before the Panthers went on an 8-0 run to surge ahead 47-39 on back-to-back fast-break buckets by Gathings and
Landon Quick (six points, six assists). A three-pointer by McCullough pulled the Bulldogs within 47-42 at intermission.
But the Panthers came out of the break on fire and held UNCA to one field goal in the first seven minutes of the second half. HPU hit seven of its first nine shots in the final 20 minutes and led 67-45 following a jumper by Scott with 13:00 left.
HPU outscored the Bulldogs 26-6 in the first 9:30 of the half and used a tip-in by Hilliman (who recorded his first-career double-double) to grab its biggest lead at 84-56 with 7:14 to go. Asheville made a run to cut the margin to 18 points on a three-pointer by
Oliver Holmes with 4:20 left, but would get no closer.
Titus Byrd tied his career-high with eight assists. The Panthers swiped 18 steals, led by five from White. Wilson needed just 16 minutes to score his 15 points.
C.J. Walker and
Joey Harrell each blocked a game-high three shots for Asheville, which collected 10 blocks as a team. Holmes provided nine points and five boards while
Chad Mohn added eight points, five rebounds and two blocks.
High Point held a 42-30 advantage on the boards. Both teams shot better from three-point range than from the field overall.
The Panthers travel to Charleston Southern (6-7, 3-0 Big South) Saturday afternoon in a battle of the Big South's only undefeated teams. Tip-off at the CSU Fieldhouse is set for 4:00 pm.
