Men's Soccer Falls To Stetson, 3-1

High Point dropped a 3-1 decision to Stetson on the second day of the Georgia Southern/Nike Invitational Sunday afternoon in Statesboro, Ga.

Trailing 1-0, HPU's Patrick Althoff scored in the 47th minute to tie the game before the Hatters answered with a pair of tallies to take a 3-1 win.

The Panthers fall to 4-4-0, while Stetson improves to 5-1-0.

"It's obviously disappointing to lose, but we lost to a very good team today," HPU head coach Peter Broadley said. "They answered when we scored, and then they went up 3-1 when we tried to push forward for a tying goal."

The Hatters had a 1-0 halftime lead thanks to Chris Cheredar's goal in the 27th minute.

Althoff's goal came early in the second half on an assist from Brindon Hall when he beat Stetson keeper Jeff Smeraglinolo with a shot into the left corner to tie the game at 1-1. But Mauricio Ruiz scored in the 53rd minute and Cheredar added his second goal of the contest in the 87th to help Stetson solidify its fifth win of the season.

The match featured the winners of Saturday's two games in the tournament. HPU blanked host Georgia Southern, 2-0, while Stetson blitzed Winthrop by a 4-1 count.

"We're disappointed with today's result, but it's nice to get out of here with one win this weekend," Broadley said.

High Point visits Winthrop on Wednesday in a Big South clash. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm in Rock Hill, S.C.
