Baseball Takes Second Straight From VMI, 11-2

Box Score Matt Kniginyzky threw his second complete game of the season to help High Point clinch its first Big South series victory of the season with an 11-2 victory over VMI Sunday afternoon at Erath Field.

Chris Draska and Seby Renta each homered for the victorious Panthers, who will go for the three-game series sweep Monday at 1:00 pm.

With the victory, the Panthers (8-38, 3-14 Big South) moved above the Keydets (22-28, 3-17) in the Big South standings.

Renta went 2-for-5 and drove in two runs to extend his hitting streak to 13 games (the longest for a Panther this season).

HPU, which pounded out 17 hits, got things going with three runs in the bottom of the third. Matt Keever singled, advanced to second on a passed ball, stole third and then scored on a base hit by Chris Ramirez. Corey Stang then doubled Ramirez home before Draska's single plated Stang for a 3-0 lead.

The Keydets got a run back in the fifth when Brandon Massenburg legged out an infield hit, advanced to second on a single by Robert Crumpler, stole third and scored when Chad Rice reached on a fielding error.

The Panthers put a pair on the board in the bottom of the frame on Draska's fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot to right off Duke Acors (2-8) to make it 5-1.

VMI got within 5-2 in the top of the sixth when Elliott Erbe doubled, advanced to third on a single by Kelly Sweppenhiser and came across when Jacoby Fields grounded into a double play.

HPU tacked on three more in the bottom of the sixth when a Renta base hit scored Rey Rojas, and Ramirez and Rojas scored when Nick Thompson reached on a fielding error for an 8-2 cushion.

The Panthers added three more in the seventh off VMI reliever Jimmy Thoms to complete the scoring, including Renta's third homer of the year.

Ramirez and Draska each had three hits for the Panthers, while Sweppenhiser and Crumpler had two hits apiece to pace the Keydets at the plate.

Kniginyzky scattered eight hits over nine innings, and became the second Panther in as many days to hurl a complete game. Bob Helman went the distance Saturday in HPU's 14-4 victory.

Monday's series finale features High Point's Phil Leake against VMI's Mike Anton. Click here for live stats.

Before the game, the Panthers will honor 99-year old Graham Madison, who is believed to be the oldest living High Point baseball alum. Madison graduated from HPU in 1930 and played for legendary High Point baseball (and basketball) coach Virgil Yow.
