Josh Cotten hit two home runs to lead High Point to a 5-3 win over Charleston Southern in game one of a Saturday doubleheader at Buccaneer Field in Charleston.
Matt Kniginyzky won his second-straight decision, allowing three runs in eight innings of work. Mark Shorey worked the ninth for his third save of the year.
The Bucs held on for a 6-5 win in the second game to gain a doubleheader split. Cotten homered once in that contest as well.
In game one, Cotten hit a two-run homer in the fourth and a solo shot in the seventh. The story of the game, however, was Kniginyzky (4-6), who pitched masterfully before giving way to Shorey, who held the Bucs scoreless for the final frame.
Brad Bissell took the loss, falling to 4-8 on the season.
In game two, Jeff Kolhagen's sacrifice fly to center scored Billy Dalton from third with one out in the bottom of the seventh to propel CSU (23-29, 10-11 Big South) to the win. Dalton opened the seventh with a bouncing single to left off High Point reliever Clayton Gordner, advancing to second on a stolen base. With one out, Brian Sole singled to left, moving Dalton to third.
Pinch-hitter Kolhagen lifted a soft fly to center where Panther centerfielder Chris Ramirez gloved and made a perfect throw to home. However, the throw arrived to catcher Matt Keever at the same time Dalton did with the ball skipping away from the plate.
Ian Holmen (4-4) earned the victory in relief of CSU starter Bobby Parnell, despite allowing two runs in two innings of work. Parnell allowed three runs in five innings and High Point scored two runs in the sixth off Holmen, tying the game at 5-5.
Scott Thacker delivered a bases loaded, two-run single in the big first inning, with Brad Woods scoring on an errant throw by Keever. Michael Blankenship followed with an RBI double and Jason Rose drove him in with a single to right for a 5-0 lead.
High Point starter Phil Leake allowed just two hits after the five-run first inning, leaving in the bottom of the sixth with the score tied.
The Panthers (10-41, 4-17 Big South) scored a run in the second but left the bases loaded, then added two more runs in the fifth on a single to right by Seby Renta.
HPU hosts Wake Forest Tuesday afternoon in its final home contest of the season. Nine Panther seniors will be honored before the game, which starts at 3:00 pm.
