Box Score Jordan Haar hit two home runs, including a three-run homer in the first inning, to lead Charleston Southern to a 10-1 victory over High Point in the opener of a three game Big South Conference baseball series Friday afternoon at Buccaneer Field.
R.J. Swindle (8-4) got the win for the Bucs, while
Bob Helman (2-7) took the loss for the Panthers.
With the loss, the Panthers (9-40, 3-16 Big South) were eliminated from the race to qualify for the six-team Big South Tournament. CSU (22-28, 9-10) can lock up a spot in the six-team field with one win in their final five games or a Liberty loss.
Haar's three-run shot was part of a four-run first for CSU, which also got an RBI single from
Scotty Thacker which scored
Brian Sole to take an early 4-0 lead.
The Panthers got within 4-1 in the top of the fifth when
Matt Richardson was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a single to right by
Matt Calcagni.
Rey Rojas then singled to give the Panthers runners on first and second with two out, but Swindle got
Matt Keever to fly out to end the threat.
The Bucs added a single run in the sixth off Helman when
Jay Reynolds stole home as part of a double steal, and added five more in the seventh off relievers
John Wanger and
Travis Motsinger. Included in the rally were a two-run double by Reynolds and Haar's second home run of the day (his 14th of the season).
Swindle allowed one run and five hits in six innings en route to his eighth win of the season. Helman, who had thrown a complete game in his last start (against VMI on Saturday) allowed five runs and nine hits in six innings of work.
The teams play a doubleheader Saturday at 12:30 pm.
Matt Kniginyzky will start the first game against
Brad Bissell, while game two will feature
