Box Score Matt Smith had four hits and VMI spoiled High Point's bid for a three-game series sweep with a 10-2 win over the homestanding Panthers Monday afternoon at Erath Field.
Mike Anton (1-1) allowed one earned run and four hits in seven innings of work to earn the win for the Keydets.
Phil Leake (1-4) took the loss for High Point.
VMI improves to 23-28 (4-17 in Big South play), while the Panthers dip to 8-39 (3-15).
The game featured a whopping 11 hit batsmen.
The Keydets got all the offense they would need in the top of the first. Smith led off with the first of three doubles in the frame, and scored on a single by
Elliott Erbe.
Jacoby Fields then doubled home
Kelly Sweppenhiser (who had reached on a fielders choice), and
Scott Seawell scored Fields with another double to center for a 3-0 VMI lead.
The Keydets made it 4-0 in the second on Smith's RBi single which scored
Jon Wade. HPU pulled within 4-1 in the bottom of the inning when
Justin Pinyan singled, advanced to second on a groundout and scored after
Matt Calcagni reached on a fielding error.
VMI added three runs in the fourth for a 7-1 advantage on a Smith RBI single which scored Seawell, a bases-loaded walk to
Brandon Massenburg that forced home Wade, and a sacrifice fly by Erbe that plated
Chad Rice.
Both teams scored a single run in the sixth -- VMI on a bases-loaded walk to Erbe which scored Wade, and the Panthers when Pinyan singled through the infield to score
Corey Stang and cut the deficit to 8-2.
The Keydets added one insurance run in the seventh and eighth innings to complete the scoring and claim the win.
Seby Renta went 0-for-3 at the plate and saw his 13-game hitting streak snapped for HPU.
Before the game, the Panthers honored 99-year old
Graham Madison, who graduated from HPU in 1930 and is the oldest living High Point baseball alumnus. Madison was a second baseman and pitcher, and also played basketball for legendary HPU baseball/basketball coach
Virgil Yow. Head coach
Sal Bando, Jr. presented Madison with a baseball autographed by the 2004 Panthers.
Madison was joined during the ceremony by
Grey Everhardt, who was a third baseman for the Panthers in the 1950s.
