Box Score UNC Asheville got home runs from David R. Williams, Steve Sherman and Todd Coggins to claim a 9-3 win over High Point Friday afternoon at Erath Field.
Steven Cook (5-4) got the win for the Bulldogs, while Josh Cotten (1-4) took the loss for HPU. Rey Rojas hit his team-leading sixth home run for the Panthers.
For the sixth time this season, High Point lost a game despite out-hitting its opponent. The Panthers held a 14-12 advantage in hits in the contest and stranded 11 runners to UNCA's six.
The Bulldogs (14-16, 4-3 Big South) wasted no time, putting two runs on the board in the top of the first. Matt Roberts drew a one-out walk from Cotten before Williams hit his third home run of the season, a two-run shot to left-center for a 2-0 advantage.
High Point (5-28, 0-10) got one of those runs back on Rojas' lead-off solo shot off Cook to pull within 2-1.
Asheville went back up by two with an unearned run in the second when Steve Burnich walked and eventually scored an error to make it 3-1, and the Bulldogs plated three runs in the third to go up 6-1. Sherman led off the frame with his 10th home run of the year before Brandon Drespling's two-run double scored Coggins and Nick Jaksa.
The Panthers got within 6-2 in the bottom of the inning when Matt Keever singled and eventually scored on an infield hit by Corey Stang.
UNCA added a run in the fifth off HPU reliever Clayton Gordner when Coggins scored on a throwing error, and the Panthers moved back within 7-3 in the sixth on an RBI double by Matt Richardson which plated Chris Draska.
The Bulldogs completed the scoring with Coggins' two-run homer in the seventh.
Cook scattered 10 hits over seven innings, allowing three runs and striking out six to earn his team-best fifth win of the year. Rodney Quinn threw two scoreless innings of relief, and got out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth by inducing a double-play ground ball from Seby Renta to halt the High Point rally.
Cotten allowed seven hits and five earned runs while striking out three. Mark Shorey retired the final six Asheville hitters in order while striking out two.
The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon. Game one features Matt Kniginyzky (1-4) against David A. Williams (4-2), while game two will pit Bob Helman (1-4) against Granville Gehris (2-3).
