Elon Outlasts Baseball, 14-11

Box Score

Elon held off High Point, 14-11, in a wild non-conference baseball outing Wednesday afternoon at Erath Field.

Brian Hensen (3-1) got the win for the Phoenix, while Phil Leake (1-1) took the loss for the Panthers.

Adam Acosta picked up his third save of the year in relief for Elon, which used seven pitchers during the slugfest. HPU threw five pitchers.

The Panthers (5-27) pounded out a season-high 19 hits to Elon's 14, but fell short in a wild one.

HPU's Rey Rojas went 4-of-6 at the plate, including his team-leading fifth home run of the season.

Elon (16-17) scored three unearned runs in the top of the first, including an inside-the-park home run by Tyler Stevens that scored Gary Morris for a 3-0 Phoenix lead.

The Panthers got on the board in the bottom of the third on Rojas' solo homer to left off Hensen which cut the deficit to 3-1. HPU pushed three more across in similar fashion in the fourth, when Chris Draska reached on an infield hit and Anthony Bell doubled before Josh Cotten crushed his fourth home run of the season to deep left, clearing the bases and giving the Panthers a 4-3 advantage.

Elon got a run back in the fifth before opening the floodgates for a seven-run sixth inning which led to an 11-4 cushion. The Phoenix sent 12 hitters to the plate in the inning and scored seven runs on just two hits.

John Walker scored Evan Erickson when he reached on a throwing error, and after Jordan Reisman relieved Leake, Paul Bennett scored on a wild pitch. Drew Davis then drew a bases-loaded walk before Stevens scored Evan Tartaglia and Morris with a two-run single. The inning was capped off with Grant Rembert's two-run double which plated Stevens and Davis.

But the Panthers refused to quit and chipped away at the 11-3 deficit, scoring once in the sixth, three times in the seventh (on RBI singles by Chris Ramirez and Seby Renta and a RBI fielders' choice by Draska), and three more times in the eighth (on RBI doubles by Draska and Mark Shorey, and a wild pitch which scored Renta) to get the Panthers within 12-11.

The Phoenix added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth on Tartaglia's two-run single which scored Morris and Austin Boehme and completed the scoring. HPU made some noise off Acosta in the ninth before the reliever notched his team-best third save of the season.

For Elon, Morris went 4-of-5 with four runs scored, while Stevens drove in five runs. Renta and Cotten each had three hits, while Cotten drove in four runs for HPU.

High Point hosts UNC Asheville in a Big South Conference series beginning Friday at 3:00 pm. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for a noon first pitch.
