Baseball Drops Series Finale To Liberty, 10-7

Box Score

Liberty defeated High Point, 10-7, on Monday afternoon in the finale of a Big South Conference baseball series at Worthington Statdium.

Matt Hensley (4-2) picked up the win for the Flames, while Matt Kniginyzky (1-4) took the loss for the Panthers.

Stephen Williams earned his second save of the year in relief for Liberty.

The Flames improve to 16-12 (4-2 in Big South play), while the Panthers dip to 5-26 (0-9).

The Panthers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning off Hensley. Corey Stang's infield single scored Anthony Bell, Ken Keesee doubled to score Chris Draska and Chris Ramirez, and and Seby Renta came home on a passed ball to complete the four-run frame.

Liberty made up half of the deficit with two runs in the bottom of the inning on Jeffrey Brown's sacrifice fly which scored Jeremiah Boles and a throwing error which scored Phillip Laurent.

The Flames erased the rest and sent 10 hitters to the plate in the bottom of the second inning, scoring seven runs to grab a 9-4 advantage. Michael Just's two-run homer was the biggest blow, scoring himself and Carlos Garcia.

Kniginyzky settled down after that and blanked the Flames for the next four innings to keep the Panthers in the game. HPU scraped together a sixth-inning run to pull within 9-5 when Renta scored on a Matt Richardson sacrifice fly.

After the Flames added an unearned insurance run off Jordan Reisman in the bottom of the seventh, the Panthers got within 10-7 in the eighth after Renta's second homer of the season and Bell's sacrifice fly which scored Keesee.

But Williams shut the door with a 1-2-3 ninth inning and the Flames completed the series sweep.

Hensley allowed four earned runs in six innings of work, while Kniginyzky yielded eight earned runs -- all in the first two innings while striking out three in six innings.

Keesee and Renta each had a pair of hits for HPU. Rey Rojas went 0-for-4 at the plate and saw his nine-game hitting streak come to an end.

High Point opens a five-game homestand Wednesday afternoon at home against rival Elon. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm. The Panthers host UNC Asheville Friday and Saturday in a Big South Conference series.
