Baseball Drops Series Finale To Birmingham-Southern

Box Score

Birmingham-Southern used a seven-run third inning to break open a scoreless game and take the finale of the three-game series with a 12-4 win over High Point Sunday afternoon in a battle of Panthers at Erath Field.

Michael Wydner went 4-for-4 and scored two runs to lead the BSC attack, while Ryan Griffith drove in three runs.

Rey Rojas hit his team-leading ninth home run of the year -- a three-run shot -- in the third inning for HPU.

Wes Letson (7-2) earned the win for Birmingham-Southern, while Mark Shorey (1-9) took the loss for High Point.

BSC (32-10, 14-1 Big South) sent 11 men to the plate in the top of the third and scored seven times on seven hits, taking advantage of two High Point errors. Wydner laced a lead-off double to right off Shorey and advanced to third on a bunt single by Matt Bogue, and both scored on a fielding error by HPU third baseman Matt Richardson. After Cline advanced to third on a wild pitch, Jared Walker singled up the middle to score Cline. Connor Robertson's double moved Walker to third, and both scored on Griffith's single to center.

The final two runs of the frame came on a sacrifice fly by Pat Mizerany which scored Griffith from third. Adam Tucker came around to score on the play after right fielder Matt Keever's throw to third to get Tucker sailed into the dugout.

The homestanding Panthers (6-37, 1-14) got three back in the bottom of the inning when Justin Pinyan rapped a lead-off single and Richardson walked. Both came home on Rojas' three-run homer to left off Letson.

BSC added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the fifth on RBI singles by Bogue and Walker. HPU pulled within 9-4 in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Chris Ramirez which scored Nate Hawley.

Birmingham-Southern then added single runs in the sixth, seventh and ninth to complete the scoring in a 12-4 win.

The visiting Panthers pounded out 18 hits and took advantage of five HPU errors.

Letson went six innings, allowing four runs and six hits while striking out seven to earn the win. Brandon Hynick and Michael Repole threw a combined three innings of scoreless relief.

Shorey took the loss after allowing seven runs (but just four earned) and striking out a pair in three innings. John Wanger worked the final three innings and allowed one earned run for HPU.

Josh Cotten had a team-high two hits for High Point.

HPU makes the short trip to face cross-county rival UNC Greensboro Tuesday at 6:00 pm EDT before a 10-day break for final exams. The Panthers will return to Big South play on Saturday, May 8, against VMI at Erath Field.
