Box Score Elon downed High Point, 5-1, Wednesday night in nonconference baseball action between two old rivals at Burlington Athletic Stadium.
The Phoenix improves to 19-22, while the Panthers fall to 6-34.
Matt McSwain (2-3) went 7 1/3 innings and struck out 11 to earn the win for the Phoenix. Phil Leake (1-3) allowed three runs in six innings and took the loss for HPU.
Elon scratched out single runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings to claim a 3-0 lead before Matt Keever's solo homer in the top of the eighth off McSwain got the Panthers on the board.
But the Phoenix added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the frame and Adam Acosta retired all four hitters he faced to claim his fifth save of the season.
Matt Kniginyzky and Clayton Gordner each threw an inning of scoreless relief for the Panthers.
HPU returns to Big South Conference play after a two-week break this weekend against Birmingham-Southern at Erath Field. The three-game series starts Friday (3:00 pm) and features a noon first-pitch Saturday and a 1:00 pm start on Sunday.
