Box Score Daniel Carte and Bennett Stapf each had two hits and drove in half of Winthrop's runs to lead the homestanding Eagles to a 14-2 victory over High Point Sunday afternoon at the Winthrop Ballpark.
Rey Rojas hit his team-leading fourth home run of the season for the Panthers, who pounded out 10 hits.
Winthrop has won three straight games to improve to 14-10 overall and 3-0 in Big South play. HPU fell to 5-22 overall and 0-6 in league action.
Stapf's grand slam highlighted a five-run seventh-inning outburst while Carte's three-run shot in the eighth highlighted the Eagles' four-run outburst that inning.
Winthrop got things going in the first, scoring two runs to take the early lead. The Eagles got their first two on board as Jacob Dempsey doubled to centerfield to drive in Brian Haney and give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Lentz singled to left to drive in Dempsey and push Winthrop's lead to 2-0.
Rojas cut the lead to to 2-1 in the fifth with a solo home run to left-center.
The Eagles responded with two in the bottom half of the fifth to extend their lead to 4-1. With one out, Dempsey's second double of the game drove in Haney to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead. David Scoggin singled with two outs to drive in Dempsey and give Winthrop a 4-1 lead. Winthrop went on to add one in the sixth, five in the seventh and four in the eighth to take a 14-1 lead.
HPU scored an unearned run in the ninth to complete the scoring when Chris Draska came across on a passed ball.
Thomas Olejniczak (1-0) took the win, while Josh Cotten (1-3) gave up four runs over five innings to take the loss for HPU.
The Panthers travel to Duke (15-12, 4-2 ACC) on Tuesday afternoon (3:00 pm first pitch)before heading to Liberty (12-12, 1-2 Big South) for a three-game Big South series next weekend.
