Box Score Justin Tubb tossed a two-hit, complete game shutout to lead Radford to an 11-0 win over host High Point Friday afternoon in the Big South Conference opener for both teams Friday afternoon at Erath Field.
The Highlanders improve to 4-12 (1-0 in Conference play), while the Panthers drop to 4-17 (0-1).
Tubb (1-4) retired the first 16 hitters he faced, struck out nine and didn't walk a batter the entire afternoon.
Matt Kniginyzky (1-2) took the loss for HPU, allowing eight earned runs and 10 hits while striking out six in four innings of work.
Five Radford players --
John Vellines,
Stuart Richie, Alan Ashworth, Kellen Wohlford, Matt Mantione -- collected a pair of hits in the contest.
The Highlanders opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning on Vellines' second home run of the season, a two-run shot to center field which scored
Mark Fleisher and gave RU a 2-0 advantage.
Fleisher's three-run, two out triple in the third cleared the bases and made it 5-0 in favor of Radford, which increased its lead to 9-0 on Wohlford's two-run homer and Vellines' two-run double in the fourth and added a pair off Panther reliever
Phil Leake in the fifth.
Matt Richardson laced a one-out single to right in the bottom of the sixth to become the first Panther to reach base, while
Chris Draska's ninth-inning pinch-hit single was HPU's other hit.
Vellines drove in four of Radford's runs, while Fleisher plated three.
