Baseball Knocks Off Charlotte, 6-4

Box Score

Bob Helman recorded his first victory in a High Point uniform and Chris Ramirez had three hits to help the Panthers snap out of a funk and record a 6-4 win over homestanding Charlotte Sunday afternoon at Phillips Field.

The Panthers improve to 4-15 and shattered a ten-game skid, while the 49ers fall to 8-5.

Helman struck out six and allowed three earned runs in 5 1/3 innings. Mark Shorey fanned a quartet of 49ers in 2 1/3 innings of relief en route to his first save of the year.

The Panthers handed Charlotte ace Matt Landphair (3-1) his first loss of the season.

HPU scored five of its six runs in the first four innings, starting with a single run in the first when Rey Rojas walked and then scored on an infield single by Ramirez. The Panthers went up 2-0 following Matt Calcagni's sacrifice fly in the second which scored Brent Myers.

High Point grabbed a 3-0 lead in the third after Josh Doane walked, stole second, and scored on a base hit by Corey Stang.

After a sacrifice fly by Charlotte's Thomas Bowker in the bottom of the third which scored Chris Lane and cut the Panthers' lead to 3-1. HPU put up a pair of runs in the fifth on Calcagni's single (scoring Nate Hawley) and Rojas' double (which plated Calcagni) for a 5-1 Panther cushion.

The 49ers responded with a single run in the bottom of the fifth and two runs in the sixth to pull within 5-4 before HPU added an insurance run in the seventh. Ramirez doubled to left and scored Calcagni for a 6-4 High Point advantage.

The Panther bullpen took over from there, as Matt Kniginyzky and Shorey combined to allow just one hit and struck out six in 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Helman.
