E.J. Gallup tossed in a game-high 19 points and swiped six steals to lead Coastal Carolina to a 73-52 win over homestanding High Point Monday night in the Millis Center.
The victory brings the Chanticleers (11-12 overall) back to the .500 mark in Big South play (6-6), while the Panthers fall to 14-8 (7-4 in the League), and dropped just their second home contest of the season in the process.
Zione White led HPU with 16 points, while Patrick Hilliman added a career-best 14 points and nine rebounds.
Coastal snapped a three-game losing skid in resounding fashion by jumping on the Panthers early and never looking back. The Chants scored 20 of the contest's first 25 points to race out to a 20-5 advantage ten minutes in on a three-pointer by Alvin Green.
The Panthers quickly cut the deficit to eight points with a 9-2 run to pull within 22-14 following a White layup at the 8:09 mark of the half. Strangely enough, it would be the closest HPU would come the rest of the night. Coastal used a 10-2 run to go up 39-22 on Colin Stevens' three-pointer and coasted into the locker room with a 39-24 halftime advantage.
By halftime, Gallup had more than twice as many points (12) as he scored against the Panthers in 40 minutes of the earlier meeting between the schools (a 75-69 HPU win on Jan. 5 in Conway, when the Panthers limited him to five points).
The Panthers would cut the margin to 11 points on three occasions in the second half, and pulled within 10 points at 43-33 after White scored on back-to-back layups with 15:17 to go. But the Chants took advantage of 19 High Point turnovers and built a 24-point lead before Chris Mayshack hit a trey as the clock wound down to bring the final to 73-52.
Green added 14 points, six rebounds and six assists for Coastal, which outrebounded HPU by a 39-26 count and pulled down 17 offensive rebounds.
The Chants shot 45.8 percent to High Point's 37.5 percent. Coastal limited the Panthers to just 3-of-11 shooting from behind the three-point line, and held reigning Big South Co-Player of the Week Danny Gathings to his lowest scoring output of the season (six points).
High Point visits Winthrop (13-10, 7-5) for an important Big South showdown Wednesday night in Rock Hill. Tip-off in the Winthrop Coliseum is set for 7:00 pm.
