Box Score In a matchup of Guilford County rivals, UNC Greensboro stayed undefeated on the season with a 9-4 win over High Point Wednesday afternoon at Erath Field.
The Spartans improve to 4-0, while the Panthers drop to 3-6.
Scooter Michael (2-0) was the winning pitcher for UNCG, while Mark Shorey (1-2) took the loss for HPU.
Trailing 1-0, the Panthers put three runs on the board in the bottom of the 2nd to take a 3-1 lead. Corey Stang drew a lead-off walk and Matt Gorman advanced him to second with a single. Both then came around to score on a double by Justin Pinyan, and a two-out single by Rey Rojas plated Pinyan for the 3-1 advantage.
UNCG struck back with three runs in the 4th and one in the 5th off Shorey, who allowed five runs in four innings while striking out four. The Spartans added two in the 5th and one in the 7th off the Panther bullpen to increase their lead to 8-3.
Josh Cotten scored Chris Ramirez with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the 8th to account for the Panthers' final run of the game.
Michael allowed three runs and four hits in six innings of work en route to his second victory of the year.
Offensively, HPU's Stang tallied two hits and Pinyan added two RBI for the Panthers, who were outhit 12-7.
High Point continues an eight-game homestand when it opens a four-game weekend series with Xavier Friday afternoon at Erath Field. First pitch is set for 2:30 pm.
