Box Score Matt Keever and Seby Renta each hit home runs to lead High Point to a 4-3 win over Dayton in the series finale between the clubs Sunday afternoon at Erath Field.
Renta connected for a solo shot in the bottom of the 1st inning, while Keever's two-run blast in the 4th stood up as the game-winner and made a victor out of HPU starter Josh Cotten (1-0).
The Panthers improve to 3-5 on the season, while the Flyers fall to 2-1.
Brooks Hazelbaker (0-1) took the loss for Dayton, while Matt Christie earned his first save of the season in relief for the Panthers.
Following Renta's two-out homer in the 1st, Cotten and Corey Stang hit back-to-back doubles off Hazelbaker to give the Panthers an early 2-0 lead.
Dayton responded for three runs in the 2nd off Cotten, who walked Aaron Hepner and hit Brad Beatty with a pitch, and saw the bases loaded when Renta misplayed a sacrifice bunt attempt by Michael DeLuca.
Consecutive base hits by Joe McSoley and Nick Bohnenstiehl scored Hepner and Beatty, and an RBI groundout by Tom Beechem gave the Flyers a 3-2 advantage.
The score remained that way until the bottom of the 4th, when Ken Keesee laced a one-out single to left, setting the stage for Keever's bomb to right and the eventual game-winning runs.
Cotten allowed two earned runs and four hits in 6 1/3 innings of work, striking out five in the process. Christie allowed just one hit in 2 2/3 innings of relief for HPU.
Hazelbaker went four innings, allowing seven hits and four runs against four strikeouts. Kaleb Thompson threw four innings of scoreless relief for the Flyers.
The Panthers are in the middle of an eight-game homestand, which continues Wednesday against cross-county rival UNC Greensboro at Erath Field. First pitch is set for 2:00 pm.
