Box Score High Point got a two-run homer from Rey Rojas and took a 2-0 lead into the ninth inning, but Dayton rallied for three runs and claimed its second-straight win over the Panthers, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at Erath Field.
The Flyers improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Panthers dip to 2-5.
The comeback spoiled a stellar performance by HPU starter Matt Kniginyzky, who allowed just two hits and two runs in 8 1/3 innings. Clayton Gordner (0-1) took the loss in relief.
The Panthers scored both of their runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs, Matt Calcagni singled and Rojas came through with his second home run of the season, a two-run shot to give HPU a 2-0 cushion.
Kniginyzky took the lead and ran with it for 8 1/3 frames until he ran into trouble in the top of the ninth. After Brandon Godzik grounded out, Nick Bohnenstiehl drew a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. Todd Beechem then was hit by a pitch. After Gordner replaced Kniginyzky, Patrick Flynn cut HPU's lead in half when he singled home Bohnenstiehl and moved Beechem to third -- setting the stage for Chad Liter, who drove in the decisive two runs with a base hit.
The Panthers did threaten in their final at-bat. Matt Gorman's one-out single put the tying run on base, and Chris Draska drew a walk and trotted to first as the possible winning run. Matt Keever moved the runners to second and third with a groundout to first, but Craig Stammen struck out Calcagni to end the threat and record his first save of the season.
Mark Eger (1-0) was the winning pitcher for the Flyers in relief of starter Blevins.
Nick Thompson had a game-high two hits for HPU, which out-hit the Flyers by a 7-4 count.
