Box Score Kate Jenner tied a career-high with 13 points to lead High Point to a 68-53 win over Birmingham-Southern Saturday night in a Big South women's basketball battle of Panthers from the Millis Center.
HPU has now won four of five games and improves to 11-10 (5-3 in Conference play), while BSC dips to 11-10 (3-5 in the League).
Jenner was joined in double-figures by three other HPU players:
Katie Ralls (12 points),
Chan Ingram (12 points) and
Tonya Tripp (11 points).
Katie O'Dell (nine points, 11 rebounds) just missed a double-double.
BSC got a team-high 11 points from
Amy Woods.
Muneca Oliver added nine points, while
Ricka Spears and
Lindsay Boyett contributed eight points apiece.
High Point trailed just once -- at 2-1 in the opening minutes -- and held a nine-point first-half lead on three different occasions, including intermission (36-27)following an Ingram trey in the waning moments.
HPU stretched its lead to 19 points at 56-37 with 8:02 to play following a Tripp three-pointer. But BSC made a charge and rattled off a 14-2 run over the next six minutes to get within 58-51 after
Martina Knotkova stole the ball, was fouled and nailed a pair of foul shots.
High Point was able to hold on, though, behind eight foul shots and stifling defense that limited Birmingham-Southern to just one field goal in the final 4:51.
BSC shot just 28.6 percent (16-of-56) from the field, including 24 percent after halftime. HPU won the rebounding battle, 43-37.
High Point welcomes UNC Asheville to the Millis Center for an important Big South clash on Wednesday night (7:00 pm). The Panthers and Lady Bulldogs (15-6, 5-3) will enter the contest tied for second place in the Conference.
