Danny Gathings scored 12 points to become the 24th member of High Point's 1,000-point club and lead the Panthers to a 79-42 win over Greensboro College Thursday night in the Millis Center.
HPU (2-4) held the visiting Pride (2-4) to 28 percent shooting from the field and forced 27 turnovers.
Akeem Scott tallied 11 points and seven steals, while
Issa Konare collected a career-high 10 rebounds. Eight Panthers scored at least five points.
Truman Newman led the Pride (an NCAA Division III member) with a game-high 13 points.
Greensboro jumped out to a quick 10-4 lead behind five points and an assist from Newman. The Panthers took their first lead of the game (16-15) on a layup by Gathings at the 7:44 mark, and Gathings' jumper with 5:48 left before halftime gave him 1,000 points for his three-year High Point career. He became the first Panther to reach the plateau since
Dustin Van Weerdhuizen in 2003.
Gathings now has 1,006 points as a Panther and 1,145 as a collegian (including one season at Virginia Tech).
HPU closed the first half on a 20-9 run and took a 32-24 lead to intermission.
The Panthers held Greensboro to just six field goals after halftime and scored 18 of the first 24 points of the final stanza to put things away. a layup by
Titus Byrd and a free throw by Gathings gave the Panthers a 50-30 cushion with 12:30 left.
High Point outscored the Pride 47-18 in the second half en route to the 37-point margin of victory.
Chris Mayshack recorded a career-best seven points in eight minutes.
Eddie Montrell grabbed a team-high eight boards for GC.
HPU returns to the road Saturday at Creighton (4:05 pm) and visits Michigan on Tuesday.
