Men's Basketball Falls To Furman

Eric Webb scored 15 of his season-high 18 points in the second half to lead Furman to a 58-45 win over High Point Saturday night in the Millis Center.

The Paladins evened their record at 4-4, while the Panthers dropped to 2-7 on the season.

Danny Gathings led High Point with 16 points. Zione White also reached double-figures (12 points) for HPU.

Webb was joined in double-figures by teammates Quan Prowell (15 points, 11 rebounds) and Tony Carter (13 points).

Furman shot 62 percent (13-for-21) from the field following intermission after shooting just 20 percent (6-for-30) in the first half. The Panthers shot a season-low 29 percent (17-for-59) from the floor, and clung to a 19-18 halftime lead.

An unattractive first half saw the teams combine to shoot 22 percent from the floor (14-for-63). High Point used an 8-0 run early in the frame to jump out to a 10-5 lead on a layup by Issa Konaré at the 11:53 mark.

The Paladins answered with seven straight points later in the half to go up 17-14 on a dunk by Carter with 2:58 left before the break. A three-pointer by Titus Byrd and a tip-in by Konaré put HPU back in front, 19-17.

Furman opened the final period on a 5-0 run after a dunk by Diagne and a trey by Webb gave the Paladins a 23-19 advantage. The Panthers answered with a steal and runner by Akeem Scott to pull within two, 23-21, and after a Prowell bucket, Gathings scored five straight points, culminating in a three-point play to give the Panthers what would be their final lead of the game (26-25) at the 13:47 mark.

But the Paladins struck with a 13-1 run that turned things around. Carter, Prowell and Webb each connected from behind the arc during that span, and Furman grabbed its first double-digit lead of the contest, 38-27, with 10:38 to play. The Paladins were 7-of-10 from three-point range in the final 20 minutes.

High Point was able to close the gap to seven points after Gathings drained a three to pull the Panthers within 51-44 with 1:36 to go, but Webb hit three free throws in eight seconds to seal the win for the Paladins.

The teams combined for just 103 points a season after totaling 185 points together in a 98-87 Furman victory in Greenville.

Konaré provided a team-best nine rebounds to go along with six points and two blocks for HPU. Gathings added six rebounds, while Byrd contributed four assists.

For Furman, Moussa Diagne collected six points, nine rebounds and three assists. Webb added four assists. The Paladins held the rebounding edge by a 43-37 count.

Gathings moved past Charlie Floyd (1977-79/1,033 points) into 21st place on the Panthers' all-time scoring list. Gathings now has 1,047 points in a Panther uniform (and 1,186 as a collegian including his freshman year at Virginia Tech). He needs five points to pass Anthony Parrish (1978-82/1,051) for 20th place.

Both teams return to action next Saturday night at 7:00 pm. High Point hosts Mount St. Mary's, while Furman welcomes Greensboro College to Timmons Arena.
