Box Score

High Point's women's basketball team opened its home schedule with a 100-58 win over former conference foe Queens Royals Monday night in the Millis Center.

The win helped the Panthers stay perfect (2-0) on the young season.

Katie O'Dell led the Panthers for the second straight game with 18 points to go along with six rebounds. The Panthers received a huge contribution off the bench from Sarah Haak, who pitched in 13 points and seven rebounds (both career highs). Charlena Martin also contributed a solid all around performance (13 points, five steals, and four assists).

The Panthers got a huge lift from their defense, forcing the Royals (0-4) into 40 turnovers. HPU jumped out to a 51-24 halftime lead thanks to easy baskets caused by full court pressure and never looked back.

Phylicia Turner led the visiting Royals with 16 points while chipping in four rebounds. Maggie Austin added 12 points and five rebounds.

High Point pulled the rare feat of shooting a higher percentage from three-point range (50 percent, 10-20) than overall (44 percent, 36-82) from the floor. Queens shot 29 percent (17-57) from the floor and 33 percent (4-12) from behind the three-point arc.

HPU shot 58 percent from the charity stripe (18-32), while Queens shot 56 percent (20-36).  For the second game in a row, the Panthers won despite losing the battle on the glass (51-49).

This was the Panthers' first and only home appearance of 2004. High Point now faces a long seven game stretch on the road starting Saturday at North Carolina A&T and ending with games against South Florida and Indiana State at the Image Depot Classic in Tampa, Fla., Dec. 18-19.

HPU's next home game is Jan. 2, 2005 against Appalachian State.
