Men's Soccer Falls To VMI, 3-1

VMI got goals from Charles Nweke, Rory Page and Austin Williams to claim a 3-1 win over High Point Saturday afternoon in Big South Conference men's soccer action at Albion Millis Stadium.

The Keydets improve to 5-4-1 (1-1-1 in Big South play), while the Panthers drop to 4-6-0 (0-3-0).

Nweke took a cross from Parker Thurman and got VMI on the board in the 6th minute when his header from close range bounced high over the head of HPU keeper Matt Long for his team-leading seventh goal of the season and a 1-0 lead. The Keydets made it 2-0 roughly a minute later on Page's diagonal shot to the far post off an assist from Kyle Clark.

The Panthers answered just 1:09 later when Patrick Althoff played a corner kick into the box and Lane Miller headed the ball to Windley, who put it home for his second goal of the year to cut the lead to 2-1.

The Keydets, who were out-shot 9-5 in the first half and 12-11 for the contest, held a 2-1 advantage until Williams added an insurance goal on a rebound after a Nweke shot hit the crossbar in the 66th minute.

Chris Michener replaced Long in goal for the Panthers at intermission and recorded two second-half saves. Thomas Upton made three saves to earn the win for the Keydets.

The game was part of Homecoming 2004 festivities at High Point.

On Thursday night, the weekend kicked off with the 2004 High Point University Panther Club Dinner/Auction presented by the Radisson Hotel High Point. Also set for this weekend is a reunion for all former High Point baseball players and coaches. A golf tournament was held Friday, with an alumni game and varsity scrimmage on Saturday.
