High Point held visiting North Carolina State scoreless for most of the first half, but the Wolfpack opened up the floodgates and scored three times after halftime for a 4-0 win Sunday in women's soccer action at Albion Millis Stadium.
The Panthers saw their two-game winning streak snapped and fell to 3-5-0 on the season. NC State improves to 6-3-1.
Although the Wolfpack controlled the action for most of the first half, the Panthers held them scoreless until the 39th minute. That's when
Erin Griswold scored the first of her two goals when she beat HPU goalie
Katie Myers from close range.
Carol Tognetti and
Lydia McBath received assists on the goal, which was the first allowed by Myers and the Panthers in three games.
The Panthers followed with two solid chances to score, but were unable to find the net.
Ryan Hays launched a free kick into the goal area in the 40th minute that was loose in the box until NC State keeper
Megan Connors grabbed it. And in the opening minute of the second half,
Tanya Wolf had a chance in front of the Wolfpack goal, but Connors was there for her only save of the day.
Griswold made it 2-0 in the 49th minute when she scored from 8 yards out off a
Lindsey DeLorenze assist. Tognetti scored the Wolfpack's final two goals, in the 61st minute and 77th minute.
The Wolfpack outshot the Panthers, 23-7. Myers made three saves in net for HPU.
The Panthers try to stay perfect in Big South play when they visit Winthrop Wednesday night (7:00 pm kickoff).
