Jenni Shepherd led a balanced attack with 14 kills as the Charleston Southern Buccaneers opened Big South play with a 3-1 (22-30, 30-21, 30-27, 30-23) victory over visiting High Point Saturday evening at the CSU Fieldhouse.

The Panthers fell to 5-15, 0-2 in Big South play, while CSU improved to 11-5 (1-0).

HPU did get solid efforts from Kamarsha Ryan, who had 14 kills, and Jaime Kutz (11 kills) and Lindsey Pickens (10 kills). The Panthers, however, committed 33 errors compared to CSU's 22.

Four HPU players reached double-figures in digs: Heather Butt (14), Pickens (13), Kutz (12) and Kim Anderson (10). Butt also provided 36 assists.

High Point looked strong early, taking command of game one and breezing to victory. CSU responded with a great effort in the second game before the two teams tangled closely throughout game three with CSU edging out the victory.

The match appeared headed for five games when HPU bolted to a 13-8 lead in game four, but CSU rallied to take an 18-17 lead and never looked back.

Shepherd posted an impressive .444 kill percentage for CSU, committing only two attack errors in the victory. Shepherd also had four solo blocks and two service aces. Tori Owens added 13 kills and Melanie Johnson posted 11 for the Bucs. Katie O'Riordan posted 45 assists and a team-high 17 digs.
