North Carolina defeated visiting High Point, 22-5 on a cold, rainy Tuesday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium.
The Panthers fell to 11-23 on the season, while the Tar Heels (23-11) have won 20 of their 24 home games against non-conference opponents this season.
Thirteen different Tar Heels contributed with at least one hit and UNC starter Garry Bakker improved to 4-2 by giving up just two runs in five innings pitched. Jeremy Cleveland and Sammy Hewitt had three hits each, and both homered to lead the way for Carolina's offense.
Carolina scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. An RBI double by Cleveland scored leadoff batter Greg Mangum who had reached on a walk. Sean Farrell and Hewitt also drove in runs, giving the Tar Heels a 3-0 lead.
Leading 10-1 in the bottom of the third, the Tar Heels added two runs thanks to Cleveland's ninth home run of the season.
Hewitt's sixth home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth drove in Mark Griffin and gave Carolina a 13-run lead.
After a 45-minute rain delay in the middle of the fifth inning, the game resumed with Carolina leading 16-2. The Tar Heels outscored High Point by a score of 6-3 over the final four innings.
Matt Gorman led the way offensively for HPU, collecting two RBI. Mark Shorey had two hits.
Toby Hoskins took the loss for the Panthers.
High Point hosts Charleston Southern this weekend in a crucial Big South series for both teams. The three-game set begins Friday afternoon at 3:00 pm at Erath Field.
