Baseball Takes Series From Radford With 14-4 Win

Box Score

High Point scored three runs each in the fifth, sixth and eighth and added four in the ninth inning to capture the rubber-match of a three-game Big South Conference series over host Radford, 14-4, Sunday afternoon at Dedmon Center Park.

The Panthers improve to 11-22 on the season (2-6 in Big South play), while the Highlanders drop to 6-16, 2-6 in League play.

Mark Shorey (three RBI), Jayson Hoffman and Colin Cronin each collected three hits in five trips to pace the Panthers' 17-hit attack. Matt Gorman and Rey Rojas each added a pair of hits in the victory.

Clayton Gordner (4-0) worked just an inning of relief to earn his second victory in three days. Travis Motsinger allowed just a ninth-inning single over the final 3.1 innings to help preserve the win.

Josh Deaver, who struck out six, suffered his fourth loss in five decisions, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits over 5.2 innings.

Trailing 2-0 in the top of the fifth, High Point wasted little time grabbing the lead back. Jayson Hoffman lined a two-out single to right and moved to third on a pair of Deaver balks, and Matt Gorman drew a two-out walk. Cronin then doubled, scoring Hoffman, and Matt Christie delivered with a dribbler down the first base line, eluding the tag of Deaver to score Gorman. As Deaver pleaded his case with the umpire, Cronin, who was at second, came in to score and gave HPU a 3-2 lead.

Back-to-back doubles by Thompson and Shorey and an RBI single down the leftfield line by Gorman gave the Panthers a 6-2 lead in the sixth. The Highlanders pulled within 6-4 in the bottom of the frame, but a walk,  three singles, and a balk led to a three-run eighth for HPU, which extended its lead to 9-4.

A leadoff pinch-hit homerun by Ken Keesee started the Panthers' four run ninth.

HPU visits North Carolina (22-11) Tuesday night in Chapel Hill. First pitch is set for 6:00 pm.
