Box Score Josh Martin allowed just one run in eight innings of work to lead visiting Gardner-Webb to a 5-1 victory over High Point Thursday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at Erath Field.
The Panthers drop to 12-31 on the season, while the Bulldogs improve to 27-18.
Martin scattered six hits and struck out eight Panthers on his way to the win (6-5). Zachary Ward pitched a scoreless ninth for GWU.
High Point scored its only run in the first. Rey Rojas reached on a two-out error by Gardner-Webb shortstop Jon David Milford and scored from first on Kemp Smith's double to right center.
The Bulldogs came back with single runs in the second, fourth, fifth, seventh, and ninth to claim the win. Milford and Ryan Quirello each had two hits for Gardner-Webb.
Kevin Burch (4-6) was saddled with the loss for HPU despite allowing just one earned run in 6 1/3 innings of work. Burch struck out six GWU batters without surrendering a walk.
Smith and Colin Cronin led the Panthers with two hits apiece.
HPU gets a 10-day break for final exams before returning to action on Sunday, May 4, at future Big South member Birmingham-Southern for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2:00 pm EDT.
