Elon Survives Slugfest With Panthers, 15-14

Box Score

In a game which took 38 days to be rescheduled and more than three hours to play, Elon and High Point combined for 29 runs and 31 hits in a Wednesday afternoon offensive explosion at Latham Park.

When the smoke cleared, the Phoenix had held on for a wacky 15-14 victory in a game that won't count in the Big South Conference standings.

Following Rey Rojas' solo homer in the first, Elon (25-16-1) scored seven times in the second inning to take a 7-1 lead, but the Panthers (12-30) came roaring back with five in the third to pull within 7-6. The inning featured a pair of home runs -- a leadoff shot to left by Jayson Hoffman and a two-run jack by Kemp Smith.

Trailing 11-6 in the top of the sixth, the Panthers put six runs up in the frame to take a 12-11 lead -- all with two outs. Matt Richardson's pinch-hit two-run single which scored Mark Shorey and Rey Rojas and Nick Thompson's base hit that scored Smith put the Panthers on top.

Elon rallied to score one in the bottom of the inning, and chased a single HPU run in the top of the seventh wth two in the bottom of the inning to leave the score tied at 14-14. The Phoenix were able to hold HPU scoreless for two consecutive innings -- the only time either team would be stifled all day -- and got the winning run in the bottom of the ninth on Gary Morris's RBI single to center that scored Paul Bennett.

Kevin Regan (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Phoenix, while Shorey (0-1) was the hard-luck loser for the Panthers.

High Point hosts Gardner-Webb Thursday afternoon at 3:00 pm at Erath Field.
