Box Score Mike Bruschuk went 3-for-5 at the plate and helped High Point tie things up at 6-6, but three Appalachian State runs in the 7th were the difference as the Mountaineers held off the Panthers, 10-7, Tuesday afternoon in baseball action at Ray Lackey Field.
The Panthers drop to 12-29, while ASU improves to 10-25.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the third, HPU exploded for five runs. A pair of singles by Matt Christie and Colin Cronin gave the Panthers runners at first and third with no outs, and Rey Rojas scored them both with a double to deep center. After he stole third, Rojas scored when Kemp Smith reached on an error. Bruschuk then scored Smith and Nick Thompson with a single to left.
ASU came back with two in the fourth and three in the fifth off HPU starter Toby Hoskins to take a 6-5 lead, but Bruschuk doubled in the top of the sixth and scored on Matt Gorman's base hit to tie the game at 6-6.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Mountaineers pushed across three runs off HPU reliever Travis Motsinger (1-3). With runners at second and third, a Bruschuk passed ball allowed Eric Pittman to score the lead run, and Tim Johnson scored on a sac bunt by Clint Johns. A double by Justin Thomas scored Ben Marsh to give ASU a 9-6 advantage.
Bruschuk led off the top of the eighth with an infield single and cut the lead to 9-7 when Cronin drew a bases-loaded walk. ASU added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame.
High Point visits Elon for a rescheduled game Wednesday (3:00 pm). The contest will not count in the Big South Conference standings.
