Charleston Southern Takes Opener From Baseball, 4-1

Box Score

R.J. Swindle threw a complete game, striking out 11 and allowing just three hits, to lead visiting Charleston Southern over High Point, 4-1, in the opener of a three-game Big South baseball series Saturday afternoon at Erath Field.

The Bucs improve to 11-24 (4-6 in Big South play) while the Panthers drop to 11-24 (2-7).

CSU got the only runs it would need in the top of the first when Brad Woods singled, advanced to second on a base hite by Jordan Haar, stole third and scored on a throwing error by HPU catcher Jayson Hoffman. A single by Brian Sole scored Haar from second to give the Buccaneers a 2-0 advantage.

High Point cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth when the Panthers pushed across an unearned run. Rey Rojas reached on an infield single, stole second and advanced to third when the throw by first baseman Adrian Vanderburg was wild. Rojas scored on a groundout by Mark Shorey to pull the Panthers within 2-1.

The Bucs rallied for a pair of insurance runs in the top of the sixth off HPU starter Kevin Burch (3-5). Following Haar's leadoff single, Vanderburg doubled down the rightfield line to give CSU runners at second and third with nobody out, but Vanderburg missed first base and was called out on the appeal.

Haar stayed at third and came across on a balk before Jeff Kolhagen singled and scored on a double by Scott Thacker.

Swindle, the reigning Big South Pitcher of the Week, didn't allow an earned run, and only one of the three base hits he yielded got out of the infield.

The teams will play the second game of the series Sunday afternoon at 1:00 pm at Erath Field, with the finale set for 1:00 pm Monday afternoon.
