Box Score
High Point edged Buffalo, 6-4, Sunday afternoon to complete a three-game sweep of the Bulls at Erath Field.
The Panthers improve to 6-10 on the season, while Buffalo falls to 1-6.
Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth, the Panthers tied the game as Kemp Smith doubled to bring home a run and then scored the tying run on a fielder's choice by Ken Keesee.
High Point then took the lead in the bottom of the seventh as Smith hit a two-run homer off UB reliever Dustin Clark to give the Panthers a 5-3 edge. High Point added another run in the eighth for a 6-3 cushion.
The Bulls refused to go away quietly and rallyed in the ninth. With two outs and Brian Zelasko pinch-running, Jason Boom singled and Phil Vanhorne walked to load the bases. Joe Mihalics then coaxed an RBI out of a walk from Mark Shorey to close the gap to 6-4. That was as close as the Bulls could get, however, as Shorey fanned Andy Wengert to end the game.
Clark (0-1), who struck out three in three innings, took the loss for the Bulls. Toby Hoskins (1-0) picked up the win in relief for High Point (6-10) with Shorey recording his fourth save of the season.
High Point travels to Virginia Tech Wednesday for a 2:30 pm first-pitch, and opens Big South play with a three-game weekend series against Elon at Erath Field beginning Friday.
